ROAD TO COPENHAGEN, ROAD TO SUSTAINITY

‘Ours is not a reasonable stance. It is based on our world view that the whole world is a family, and our principles of inclusive growth and measurement’.
-Manmohan Singh
The Copenhagen summit happens to be an advent in the adversity. It is an eye- opener for all of us who have who have been the cause of the exploitation of mother ‘EARTH’ and seen the Newton’s 3rd law. It is not only the responsibility of the 194 big shots of the world to introduce and follow reforms, every individual has a part to play. Let us not think us an individual, not us a country but as a family, the homosapien family.
According to a recent survey, if we use our coal reserves in the same way, within four years the coal and petroleum resources in our natural home would have perished. The temperature of the earth is increasing at the rate of 4C per year. Due to this the ice caps are all melting at a faster rate. As a consequence of this by the end of the next decade three quarters of the earth would have submerged. If this situation continues by the end of 2040 this planet would be MERCURY-2.
As the proverb goes ‘Little drops of water makes up the mighty ocean’ we can all follow certain small steps which can affect the environment at large.
• Switch off all the lights and fans wherever unnecessary.
• Never put the computer in sleep mode. It consumes more power than when it is working.
• Never overcharge mobile phones or laptops. It is a source of inorganic waste.
• Avoid littering in public places.
• Planting of more trees wherever possible.
• Use of public transport is always a better option.
• Educating people about the proper use of resources.
• Suggest methods and devices which can reduce excessive consumption of energy.

“LET US BE THE CHANGE WE WANT TO SEE”.LET US MAKE OUR HOME A LONGER AND BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN.

WHY OBAMA NOW?

As we all know, Barack Hussein Obama, the current and the 44th president of the U.S.A was awarded the Nobel peace prize for the year 2009. According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee the Nobel prize has been awarded to Obama “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people”. The Nobel committee would thus have us believe that in just 10 months of the white house Obama has not only “created a new climate in international politics” but also a vision of “a world without nuclear weapons”. Great words indeed!

I sincerely hope that all this sentiments turn out to be true. Four years from now I pray that Obama is seen as one of the most influential and peaceful leaders of the world. But these are my hopes and prayers. In the past 10 months none of us can say with any certainty that Obama has shown the attributes which the Nobel committee seems to have seen. The good and glorious things that the committee has stated in the press release haven’t happened yet.

By awarding Obama, the Nobel committee is attempting to force a force a series of ex-ante actions on the U.S president. A Nobel peace prize winner will find it difficult to increase troop concentration in Afghanistan, take a hard line with Iran, take a tough position in climate change negotiations; or be a bad boy in major bodies. Another interpretation involves huge faith. The Nobel committee truly believes that the 44th U.S president is a person who will do all good and glorious things for global peace and cooperation – although we haven’t seen much of it yet.
